—  About

Hermes Visual Arts is an independent artist-run space where art practice and discussion are connected within an environment that fosters experience exchanges.

Objective:
Hermes Visual Arts is an independent artist-run space, created and managed by Carla Chaim since 2011. It is focused in reducing the gap between academic graduation and the art market. Through courses, Project Monitoring/Critique Groups, debates, exhibitions, collective proposals and art residencies. Its goal is to promote the artists’ critical maturity in a space where theoretical practices are linked to artistic production. Hermes is a place to share knowledge and experiences: enabling, encouraging and complementing the artists’ education. Moreover, the space is a platform to boost and intensify art in people’s life, amplifying their vision, making it more critical and sensible. Hermes stands as a resistance, in an effort to strengthen and enrich the artistic scene as a whole.

Hermes:
Currently, Hermes hosts three regular Project Monitoring/Critique Groups, coordinated by Carla Chaim and Marcelo Amorim, with the collaboration of guest mentors such as Ana Candida Avelar, Ana Roman, Paulo Gallina, and Tálisson Melo. The groups bring together around 50 artists on a weekly basis. A core part of the program is the continuous development of projects, the promotion of exhibitions, and collaborative work — turning artists into key agents in the process, from creation to development and completion. Always respecting individuality and artistic freedom, Hermes operates under the principles of unity and collective strength.

In addition to the regular groups, Hermes also holds special events such as talks, courses, and workshops, always focused on contemporary art production. The space also offers an artist residency program for international and out-of-state artists. The goal is to welcome creative individuals to develop projects based on their experiences in São Paulo, fostering ongoing exchanges with other art spaces both in Brazil and abroad.

Finally, Hermes houses four studios used by resident artists: Carla Chaim, Daniela Torrente, and Débora Mazloum.

— Artistic residence

The art residency fosters the exchange between artists from different nationalities, backgrounds and creative fields.

Hermes started its art residency program in 2011, aiming to offer a space for production and engagement between artists from different creative fields. Artists, curators, writers and others may apply all year round. There is no deadline for enrollment and the dates are set on common agreements.

The program includes the accompanying of the artists’ research, engagement and presentation through Project Monitoring/Critique Group groups, led by Carla Chaim and Marcelo Amorim with the collaboration of guest mentors such as Ana Candida Avelar, Ana Roman, Paulo Gallina, and Tálisson Melo . The art residency program may come to completion with a talk, studio tour and/or exhibition in Hermes’ events room.

Hermes is an independent organization which does not receive any assistance from other institutions or the government, being supported exclusively through fees and contributions from Hermes’ attendees. The art residency program is not profit oriented but rather focus in providing a welcoming space, encouraging the exchange of ideas and introduction to São Paulo’s contemporary art circuit. Therefore, artists accepted to the residency, are fully responsible for their expenses during the residency period, including: food, transportation, travelling, health insurance and art materials. Nevertheless, Hermes is pleased to provide an invitation letter or official acceptance letter for any applicants, in case of sponsorship, partnership or others.

Additionally, throughout the year, Hermes’ Team invite two artists for our art residency program. Instead of paying for accommodation, these artists are asked to donate an art work produced during their stay in Hermes.
